Before you delve into the questions, may I tell you some useful tips that will be of help as you take the test and prepare for the interview!View IPS Frequently asked Questions and Answers
First and foremost, you must know that IPS is the best school for oil and gas studies in Nigeria and West Africa in general. Second is the Centre of Excellence run by Shell at the University of Benin while the third is the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja M.Sc in Petroleum Engineering. These three schools ensure that you have your M.Sc in 12-calendar months, a feat which is not possible in the Nigerian conventional university system.
Though the above schools are very expensive, which is why companies sponsor a greater part of the cost of running petroleum-related courses in them. The standard cost of the training you will receive from IPS is roughly N5m but Total pays this amount while you pay stipends for accommodation and tuition.
Now back to business, IPS was standard in the year 2003 with Prof. Joseph Ajenka as the first Director but upon his appointment as Uniport VC, the mantle was handed over to Prof. Mike Onyekonwu who is the present Director.
It is that you know the motto and vision of IPS as this do come up unexpectedly in tests and interviews.

IPS has sister institutes namely Offshore Technology Institute (OTI) that offer M.Sc in Pipeline Engineering and Offshore Engineering, Emerald Energy Institute, Centre for Occupational health, safety and environment, Centre for oil and gas technology, Centre for gas, refining and petrochemicals, centre for petroleum geosciences etc
The entrance test into IPS is computer based at the School of Basic Studies of Uniport. 100 questions are expected to be answered and the cut-off mark is based on the general performance of students. Last year was 40.
Because of the large number of students that do enroll for IPS aptitude test and heavy network downpour, the test is administered in batches successively usually 3 batches.
After the expiration of your allocated time, the system automatically submits your work and logs you out after which the next candidate will make use of the system.
On that morning, after attendance, you will be given you unique pass code which you will use to log in.
Very importantly, only 20 or 21 persons are needed in a year in IPS but over 500 students write the test where below 100 are invited for interview and final selection made.
The bitter truth:I don’t mean to discourage you nor to underrate the potency of your belief but I must tell you the truth as an insider. Though the IPS advert has it that Second Class Upper Division (21) students are needed only but your 21 must be 4.0 or above (i.e. your CGPA) to be at an advantage.
Record has it that recently, no IPS students has a CGPA less than 4.0 in his transcript.

THE TEST STRUCTURE
The IPS entrance test is in this format:
English Language>20 questions
Mathematics>25 questions
Biology, Current Affairs, Computer Knowledge>10 questions
Physics>10 questions
Chemistry>10 questions
Basic engineering>25 questions
You are expected to answer all these questions in 1hr or thereabout. Please, make sure you monitor your time very closely and use the last 2 minutes to tick every suspected answer to any unanswered question. You might just be lucky to get 2 to 6 questions correctly by guessing and intuition.

2. FE Review Manual Rapid Preparation for the General Fundamentals of Engineering Exam 2ed. Note that the 3rd edition of this book is available and is mostly referred to by examiners but the 2nd edition is easily downloadable freely online. To get a copy of the 3rd edition, we charge N4000 for it.
3. Barron Fundamentals of Engineering Examinations. This is not free online but you can buy it from us at N5000.
