INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Question: Why did you perform poor or fail in this course?

PURPOSE OF QUESTION: This question comes up if you had a carryover in any of your university courses or performed very poor in any. They really want to know if you are actually poor in your knowledge of the course. Except you provide a good reason, this can be a trap to reduce your point especially if it’s a petroleum-related course. They want to adjudge your strengths and weakness as regards to your discipline, so you must provide soothing and convincing reasons why you had such a mark in the course.

ANSWER TIPS: Circumstances may cause poor performances in courses and these circumstances must be justifying enough to enable you jump over this trap. It’s possible you had no lab result or that you took the tests but missed the examination because of emergencies. Whatever reason it is, try to make it appealing and convincing. If you failed the course, let your later result justify the reason you gave; if it’s a poor performance, cook up reasons to convince them even if you actually failed the course. Please, never tell them you failed the course because you never understood it or that the lecturer was the cause.

SAMPLE ANSWER: “Actually, Sir! My performance in that very course was one of the surprises I had in my undergraduate days. My course adviser said I scored 56 in the exam, 14 in the test but no record was entered for my laboratory work. As part of the school’s policy, a missing lab score results to an automatic failure in that course no matter your exam score. Though, I took part in all the lab sections, it has remained a surprise to me as to why my score was missing. After applying for cross-checking, I was advised by my course-adviser to retake the course which I did and the later result is reflected in my 4th year result. ”........
